FotoNation appoints new managing director | Stramullen to be 'Iced'

Ice Broadband is to roll out its 'Ice Pack' phone and broadband products to areas of County Meath, where many residents have been without a broadband service. Ice Broadband will cover the Stramullen area, including Bettystown and Julianstown. The Labour Party had previously labelled Stramullen a "broadband black hole in Communications Minister Noel Dempsey's backyard".

Network infrastructure company MobileAware has announced the appointment of Alan Taylor and Alex Ash to co-head the organisation's global strategic alliance activities. Taylor comes from Intervoice, while Ash was with BEA Systems prior to joining MobileAware.

Shane Fanning has been appointed managing director of imaging technology firm FotoNation. From its Galway headquarters, Fanning will manage the US company's Irish and Romanian operations. Fanning holds a degree in electronic engineering from Carlow IT, and previously worked for Ericsson in Sweden and Ireland.

Printing and imaging firm Epson has won two awards from the Technical Imaging Press Association (TIPA). The panel voted the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 as the 'Best Expert Photo Printer in Europe 2007' and the Epson P-5000 Multimedia Storage Viewer as the 'Best Storage Back-up in Europe 2007'.

A new all-Ireland partnership was signed between three Irish universities on Tuesday. Queen's University Belfast (QUB), Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and University College Dublin (UCD) have united in a strategic partnership to further collaborative research. The thrust of this collaboration concerns biomedical sciences and biomedical informatics -- with a focus on experimental cancer medicine, infection and immunity; arts and human sciences, including socio-economics and Irish studies; and physical sciences, including nanoscience. Under the auspices of the research partnership, Trinity College and QUB will also collaborate on creative writing, high performance computing, nanoscience, drug design, medicinal chemistry and cancer research and cell biology.
